Sevilla
Many tourists are drawn to the province of Sevilla by its capital, Sevilla, Andalucia's largest city placed on the banks of the river Guadalquivir. The city is one of the largest historical centres in Europe and known for its magnificent churches, convents, important monuments, Moorish buildings and fascinating history but also for its vitality, great choice of tapas bars and a buzzing nightlife.
In Sevilla we recommend you to visit the old city, with the Cathedral and the Giralda tower at its heart. Very close by you find the royal Mudéjar palace known as the Alcazar with marvellous gardens and the Santa Cruz quarter, with cramped streets, flowered balconies, richly decorated facades and hidden patios. If you cross over the Guadalquívir River, you will explore the lively popular quarter of Triana with charming, narrow streets around the church of Santa Ana and traditional, ceramic factories.
If you have the chance to visit Sevilla in spring you can experience the Semana Santa. It is truly spectacular with extraordinary processions of masked penitents and carnival-style floats that takes place in the Easter week. Two weeks after the annual Fería de Abril is celebrated. It is a week-long party of drink, food and dance, which allows the men to parade on their fine horses and the women to dance in brilliantly coloured gypsy dresses.
